On May 13, 2025, Capo Peloro reached a historic milestone: this northeastern tip of Sicily, where the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas meet, was officially awarded the Blue Flag for the first time by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
This prestigious international recognition highlights both the environmental quality and beach services across three key coastal areas in the municipality of Messina. The award includes the Capo Peloro peninsula - encompassing Torre Faro, Ganzirri, and Mortelle - as well as the southern coast of Santa Margherita. In total, over 11 kilometers of coastline have been certified. This marks the first time Messina joins Sicily’s network of Blue Flag beaches, which now includes 14 locations for 2025.

What the Blue Flag Means for Capo Peloro
The Blue Flag is an internationally recognized eco-label awarded annually to beaches and marinas that meet more than 30 rigorous environmental and service-based criteria. Key standards include:
Clean water: bathing waters must be rated “excellent” for at least four consecutive years.
Environmental management: includes wastewater treatment, waste sorting, and well-kept public spaces.
Beach services: lifeguard presence, accessible restrooms, and inclusive infrastructure.
Environmental education: activities for both visitors and locals that promote sustainability.
From 2025 onward, certified municipalities must also submit a Sustainability Action Plan. In anticipation, Messina launched a three-year initiative titled "Messina Blue Flag 2025–2027" to enhance its coastline and promote sustainable tourism.
A Natural Treasure Between Two Seas
The Capo Peloro peninsula is not only a geographic landmark but a natural gem, rich in biodiversity and symbolism. As Sicily’s northeastern tip, it serves as the meeting point of two seas, creating stunning currents and scenic marine landscapes.
The area is protected under the Capo Peloro Lagoon Nature Reserve, which includes the brackish lakes of Ganzirri and Faro. These wetlands host over 400 aquatic species and more than 160 migratory bird species. With its golden sands, beach rock formations, and clear waters, the coastline is considered one of the most valuable in eastern Sicily.
National Geographic has recognized Capo Peloro as one of Italy’s most beautiful coastal stretches. Particularly striking is Punta del Faro, where panoramic views extend across the Strait of Messina to the Calabrian mountains. A place where sea, history, and biodiversity converge in an open-air natural laboratory.
A Recognition That Enhances Life and Tourism
Earning the Blue Flag is far more than symbolic; it is a tangible driver for improvement and opportunity.
For residents, it means cleaner public spaces, safer and more accessible beaches, better public services, and greener mobility options.
For visitors, it offers confidence in choosing a destination that values quality, safety, and environmental respect.
For local businesses, it strengthens the region’s image and supports sustainable, experience-driven tourism.
Mayor Federico Basile commented:
“This recognition is the result of a strategic vision that prioritizes sustainability and the valorization of our coast, placing Messina among Sicily’s top seaside destinations.”
