Capo Peloro Lagoon
The Oriented Nature Reserve Capo Peloro Lagoon is a natural gem nestled on the enchanting northeastern coast of Sicily. Established in 2001, this reserve covers 68.12 hectares and protects a variety of precious and delicate ecosystems.
From brackish lagoons and sandy dunes to rich wetlands, the reserve is a treasure trove of biodiversity. This haven is home to over 400 species of aquatic life, including many rare and endemic species. The lakes, known as Pantano Grande (Lake Ganzirri) and Pantano Piccolo (Lake Torre Faro), are natural wonders with distinct features. Lake Ganzirri spans 338,400 square meters, stretching 2 km from north to south and 200 meters in width, with a depth of 6.5 meters. In contrast, Lake Torre Faro, though smaller in area at 263,600 square meters, reaches an impressive depth of 28 meters, giving it a volume of nearly 2.6 million cubic meters.
The biodiversity around these lakes is spectacular. The lakes have long been centers for cultivating mussels, oysters, clams, and other seafood, which can be savored in local dishes. Fish such as mullet, eels, and gilthead bream navigate through the connecting canals, settling into their natural habitat.
